Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses very fine needles called microneedles to precisely puncture your skin. These tiny micro punctures stimulate the body’s natural healing process, which then triggers collagen production.

The skin’s production of collagen declines over the years, causing loose skin and wrinkles. Following microneedling, your new collagen-rich skin is stronger and more resilient. As a result, wrinkles are smoothed away and you look younger.

Can microneedling be combined with PRP?

Your microneedling procedure can be combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is easily made from your blood in the office. PRP has a high concentration of platelets, and platelets contain natural healers called growth factors.

Platelets release growth factors at the site of an injury, where they trigger the production of new cells and substances, such as collagen, blood vessels, and skin cells.

After performing microneedling, Dr. Newen applies the PRP to your skin. The small punctures let the PRP penetrate into your skin, and since the punctures are injuries, the platelets send out growth factors that help to regenerate healthy, strong skin.

What cosmetic concerns improve with microneedling?

Microneedling is effective on its own, as it restores your skin’s strength and tone. The addition of PRP accelerates healing and enhances your overall results.

Microneedling alone and with PRP fights the sign of aging by:

  • Diminishing the appearance of wrinkles
  • Eliminating brown spots
  • Tightening and toning your skin
  • Minimizing pores
  • Minimizing the appearance of scars

Microneedling is safe for all skin types and can be used on your face as well as other areas of your body.

What can I expect after microneedling?

After microneedling, you may experience mild swelling and redness. Some patients develop a little bruising. These side effects shouldn’t last long, but Dr. Newen provides more details about what to expect while you heal.

It takes time for your body to produce collagen and elastin and for new skin cells to come to the surface. As a result, you’ll gradually see smoother, tighter skin over a few weeks.

If you want to restore more youthful skin without undergoing surgery, microneedling at The Image Center may be the treatment you need. Call the office or schedule an appointment online for a skin evaluation and to discuss microneedling.
