Botulinum Toxin (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) Q & A

What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin injections work by weakening or paralyzing certain muscles or by blocking certain nerves. The effects last about three to twelve months, depending on what you are treating. The most common side effects are pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. You could also have flu-like symptoms, headache, and upset stomach. Injections in the face may also cause temporary drooping eyelids. You should not use Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is treated for:

  • Temporary smoothing of facial wrinkles and improving your appearance
  • Severe underarm sweating
  • Chronic migraine

What is Botox and how does it treat facial wrinkles?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that blocks the nerve signals responsible for triggering muscle contractions. This makes Botox the perfect treatment for dynamic wrinkles, which develop as you repeatedly use the same muscles to make certain facial expressions. Botox injections can be used to treat:

  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead furrows

When your provider at The Image Center injects Botox into a few carefully targeted muscles, the muscles relax, and the wrinkles they cause are smoothed away.

You’ll see the full effect of your Botox treatment in two to three days. The results last up to four months, then you can safely get another Botox treatment when the effect wears off.*
